App cost calculator: scope, assumptions and next steps

Use this tool to explore the scope of an app, portal or platform. Select the platforms, functions and design level for the first release. The result is an initial model-based estimate; an implementation proposal requires a review of the actual workflows and integrations.

How the calculator works

The current model adds a base amount for the project type, platform amounts, selected feature amounts and design effort. A complexity factor applies to the feature subtotal when more features are selected. The model then applies a factor of 0.8 and a range of 90% to 120% around that result. These weights are planning assumptions, not measured effort or a discount offer.

A worked example

For a mobile app with iOS and Android, login and basic design, the current calculation is (14 000 + 2 600 + 2 600 + 2 200) × 0.8 = 17 120 EUR. Its displayed range is 15 408 to 20 544 EUR. This example only demonstrates the model. It does not specify a complete production scope or replace the project ranges below.

Prototype, productive MVP and platform

A validation prototype has a planning range of 8 000–20 000 EUR. A productive B2B MVP with backend has a range of 25 000–60 000 EUR; a complex platform has a range of 60 000–150 000+ EUR. A simple feature estimate can fall below these ranges because production requirements are not fully captured by the selections. A written scope resolves that difference before commissioning.

What the estimate cannot establish

Custom features entered as free text do not receive an individually assessed price. Data migration, security or regulatory requirements, accessibility, third-party licences, hosting, taxes, support and store approval require separate clarification. A timing suggestion depends on access to systems, timely decisions and available testing capacity. It is not a guaranteed delivery date.

Turn the estimate into a project brief

Save your selected scope and prepare user roles, example workflows and interface documentation. Discuss what the first release must achieve and how it will be accepted. The team can then separate implementation, operation and later features in a proposal. You can read the cost guide and project examples before sharing contact information.

Project questions and practical answers

How should you use an app cost calculator and its estimate?

Use the calculator to describe the first release, required platforms and integrations, then compare the result with a written scope. The estimate is a planning aid rather than a binding offer. For UK projects, confirm whether the quote is in EUR or GBP and how taxes and exchange rates are handled. Data migration, external licences, hosting and ongoing support require explicit assumptions.
